Physical standby databases require the transportation of redo log files from the primary to the standby database. When the redo is written to a remote node, it is received by the Remote File Server (RFS) background process at the destination. The RFS background process is started automatically when the standby database is mounted. The RFS process writes the redo to either a standby redo logfileor an archived logfile,depending on your configuration. The bandwidth and latency of the network must be sufficiently high to handle the expected amount of redo. Latency is particularly important for zero and minimal data loss configurations, as redo must be transported successfully before a transaction completes. For all environments, the network must be sufficiently fast for redo to be transmitted and applied within an acceptable time frame. The required bandwidth and latency are dependent on the amount of redo generated and on the distribution of redo generation over time. On the primary database, redo logfilescan be transported by either the A C or LW background R/ GR process.

In early versions of physical standby, redo logs were transported by the ARCn background process. Therefore, the redo logs could only be transported when a redo log switch occurred. Using this configuration, there was a very high probability of data loss in the event of a failure of the primary database. Redo log transportation using the A C process is still available in Oracle 10.1 and above. Of the R/ various methods available, this method has the least impact on performance and thus may still be relevant in environments such as data warehouses where failed jobs can be reexecuted. However, the A C7 background process should not be used in environments where zero or minimal data loss R/ is a requirement.

In Oracle 9.0.1 and above, physical standby has been enhanced, so that in addition to the A C backR/ ground process, the L W background process can also transport redo to the standby database. Use GR of the L W background process allows zero or minimal data loss to be guaranteed. However, this GR level of availability may adversely affect performance. The L W process can be configured to transport redo logs synchronously ( Y C mode) or asynGR SN chronously ( S N mode). If configured synchronously, redo is copied to all standby destinations at AY C the same time that it is written to the online redo log files. If configured asynchronously, redo is buffered on the primary database and subsequently transported to the standby database by a separate background process. With synchronous mode, zero data loss can be guaranteed; with asynchronous mode, in the event of a failure of the primary database, the currently buffered redo can potentially be lost. You can change between asynchronous and synchronous log transportation dynamically. However, any changes to the configuration parameters will not take effect until the next log switch operation on the primary database, which can be forced using either the following command: SOL> ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE; or the command SOL> ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
