Smiles was an opportunity to bring together a number of game design ideas. I wanted it to be a puzzle game that does broadly accessible right, for casual to seasoned players a game to be played at the user s own pace and worth playing by a broad audience. I also wanted Smiles to bring the experience of a well-made console game to the iPhone. Smiles has fared extremely well in eyes of players and press alike, scoring many five-star ratings and numerous accolades. Notably, it was a finalist for Best Game in the 2009 Independent Games Festival (IGF) Mobile contest. But for everything Smiles does, cheerful harmless attire and all, it still has a dark little secret. Smiles was developed almost entirely on Windows, as shown in Figure 6-6. My tools of choice are MinGW and MSYS, a GCC port and Unix environment for Windows. To learn more about both, visit http://www.mingw.org. I do virtually all of my programming in the UltraEdit text editor (http://www.ultraedit.com/). Mac fanatics, before you torch this book for my heresy, you really should hear me out. Think of me as a Linux developer who found a comfortable way to work in Windows. As it turns out, most console software development kits just happen to be entirely Windows-based, featuring Linux/Unix tools like GCC. In fact, that s one of the things that make the iPhone attractive to console developers. Xcode also uses GCC. It s hidden behind the scenes, but it s there. After that, it should be less surprising to learn that Smiles was also partially developed on Linux. Figure 6-7 shows the text editor Geany (http://www.geany.org/) running on Xfce.

Bug Out!

My primary laptop during Smiles development was a lightweight Linux netbook. I would have loved a MacBook Air, but $300 compared to $1,800 was a good argument for the Linux system. I should make it clear that Smiles was not developed without a Mac. I have a Mac mini I turn to whenever I need to test on an iPhone. But by following some guidelines, I was able to develop and run the game on three platforms simultaneously: Windows, Linux, and iPhone. I could go on and on about Smiles (and I do on my blog), but here seems a good place to move on to the subject of this chapter: portability.
