I won t kid you the cost-saving advantages of working portably come at a price. It s more work. You can t use the convenient font and printing code, 2D vector primitives, menus, and graphics loading provided by Apple. You need to stay platform-agnostic, and that means OpenGL, OpenGL ES (OpenGL for Embedded Systems), or software rendering. Pixels and polygons are your tools. But with more work comes more flexibility. You gain the ability to fully style every element of your game. Button graphics and menus can take on a flat or a full 3D look. You can go above and beyond the styles and fonts provided by Apple, and create completely seamless visual experiences. However, to work portably, you need to start from virtually nothing. For some people, that can be a scary proposition. That s not to say you can t draw vectors, print text, and so on. It just means you may need to write that code yourself. You can pick up and evaluate several open source and liberal license projects along the way. For example, compression is something done extremely well and made freely available (zlib, bzip2, and LZMA). But for the ultimate flexibility, you may need to reinvent the wheel by writing some fundamental code yourself.

NOTE: If you purchase a new iPod touch while travelling and bring it home to a country where it s not yet sold, then there s a good chance you may not be able to use your iPod touch to purchase apps specifically designed for the iPod touch in your home country from the App Store. The work-around is to buy iPod touch apps on the desktop version of iTunes (which does work) and sync them over.

The second challenge is keeping in mind the capabilities the iPhone does have that your usual desktop computer doesn t. The third, and perhaps most challenging, area is in not misusing what you do have to make up for what you lack. You need to avoid things like the overused shaking gesture when the gesture makes no sense for the function it is performing or using actions the user would never dream of doing, like a three-finger double-tap (yes, I ve seen it done). The whole idea behind these new, more physical and tangible input methods is to use them to make a user interface that works in the same way that real-world objects work. You might need to explain how to do a particular action one time, but this should result in an exclamation of Ah! Of course! and never Hmm . . . OK, I better write that down. In this chapter, we ll look at how some of these challenges presented themselves while developing my Falling Balls and Gravity Pods games and look at some of the solutions I attempted and finally settled on.
